Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets - Book Review

Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets

What Is It About?

This book is about what can be accomplished using trends to invest and trade. The book provides a narrative description of what trend following is and examines those who practice trend following. By examining several trend followers the author advocates that trend following leads to market success.

What Did I Get Out Of It As A New Investor?

The book provides a great introduction to understanding trends. In a very easy to read and fast paced format the author sets forth a convincing argument that what matters is the trend. Using a narrative with detailed charts the author takes the reader through a step by step analysis of the success trend following can bring.

The book makes clear that success only comes from being on the right side of the trade. Whether you trade by the day or decade, you will not be successful unless you identify those investments whose trends will result in your investment appreciating over the given time period. Simply put, it is the trend that really matters. An understanding of the concepts presented is essential for a new investor.

The Good News

An enjoyable read that moves quickly and covers the material in a manner easily grasped. The book also provides a comprehensive bibliography which allows for further research.

The Bad News

The book is a bit light on identifying actual techniques that trend followers use, i.e., when x and y occur a trend is established (or broken).

The Bottom Line

Trend Following is a great book. Recommended both for its quality of writing and the material covered. Note: The link I have provided is to the new and expanded edition due out in March 2007. My review is of the original edition.
